How to measure your AI visibility and citation rate
Your AI visibility can be measured: citation rate, share of voice, and signals in your analytics. The free manual method and when to pay for a tool.
When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini about a service like yours, your business either shows up in the answer or it doesn't. That's your AI visibility, and contrary to what many assume, it can be measured. Not with the precision of a Google rank tracker, but well enough to know whether you're gaining ground or your competitors are eating your citations. Here's how we measure it.
The three metrics that matter
Citation rate. Out of all the times an AI answers a question relevant to your business, in what percentage does it cite or mention you? This is the core metric of the discipline. The academic paper that coined the term GEO works precisely on this: visibility metrics inside generated answers, showing that optimizing content can raise that visibility by up to 40% in its experiments.
Share of voice. Showing up isn't enough: it matters against whom. If your competitor appears in eight out of ten answers about your category and you appear in two, that's the number that hurts.
Quality of the mention. Being cited as a recommended source is not the same as appearing in a list of ten options with no context. Record what the AI says about you, not just whether it names you.
The manual method you can run today, for free
You don't need a tool to start. You need discipline:
- Define 15 to 25 real questions. The ones your customer would ask before hiring: "best X agency in Mexico City", "how much does Y cost", "X vs Y for a small business". Don't include your brand: you're measuring whether they find you, not whether they know you.
- Ask them in the engines you care about. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews. Use clean sessions, with no history contaminating the results.
- Log everything in a table. Question, engine, date, do you appear, at what position in the list, what does it say about you, who else shows up.
- Repeat monthly. A single measurement is an anecdote. The trend is the data.
An honest warning: LLM answers vary between sessions and between weeks. That's why we measure percentages across a set of questions, not individual results. Not appearing in one specific answer today means nothing; appearing in 10% of 25 questions for three straight months means something.
The signals already sitting in your analytics
While you build the active measurement, your site is already recording passive signals:
- Referral traffic. Visits arriving from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai show up as referrals in your analytics. Those are clicks from people who saw your brand cited in an answer.
- AI crawlers in your logs. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and friends leave traces in your server logs. Getting crawled doesn't guarantee citations, but blocking them guarantees you won't appear. If you've published an llms.txt file, log requests to it too: we covered that piece in llms.txt and how to implement it.
- Leads who tell you. Add "how did you find us?" to your form. "ChatGPT recommended you" is an answer we already hear on real prospect calls.
When to pay for a monitoring tool
A category of tools now automates all of the above: they fire your question set at several engines daily, record citations, and chart share of voice against competitors. Profound, for example, published an analysis of 700,000 ChatGPT conversations with citations that shows the kind of patterns this monitoring surfaces at scale.
Our rule of thumb: a tool pays off once you have an active GEO strategy to evaluate. If you're not yet publishing citable content, monitoring will only confirm every month that you don't appear. Strategy first, dashboard second.
What to do with the number
Measuring without acting is contemplation. If your citation rate sits at zero, the work is foundational: content that answers concrete questions, structured data, and verifiable authority. We explained the full discipline in what GEO is, and it applies whether your market is Mexico or anywhere else these engines answer questions.
We do that work as a generative engine optimization agency: a visibility baseline, a citable-content strategy, and monthly measurement so you see the trend instead of promises. If you want to know where you stand today, the first measurement is part of the diagnosis when you get started.
